Why Are My Tree's Leaves Turning Yellow? A Diagnosis Guide
Yellow leaves in July mean something is wrong, and the fix depends entirely on which something. The four usual causes are iron chlorosis, overwatering, drought, and root damage, and they are easy to tell apart once you know that the pattern on the leaf matters more than the color.
Look at a single yellow leaf up close, then step back and look at the whole tree. Those two observations narrow it to one answer most of the time.
If the leaves are yellowing in October, stop reading. That is just fall.
Start with the leaf: veins or no veins
This is the fastest diagnostic on the list, and it splits the causes in half.
Yellow between the veins, veins still dark green. That is chlorosis, a nutrient uptake problem. Michigan State Extension describes the look precisely: the leaves are “greenest along the leaves’ larger veins, then growing paler in between them.” The green vein network against pale tissue is unmistakable once you have seen it.

Uniformly pale or yellow, veins included. That points to water, root damage, or nitrogen, not iron.
Now step back.
New growth at the branch tips yellow, older leaves inside still green. Iron. Iron does not move around inside a tree, so a shortage shows up in the newest leaves first while the old ones stay green.
Oldest, innermost leaves yellow first, new growth fine. Nitrogen, which moves freely and gets pulled from old leaves to feed new ones.
One branch or one side yellow, rest of the tree normal. Not a soil problem. Look for physical damage, a girdling root, or a canker on that limb.
Whole tree evenly pale. Water. Check which direction before doing anything.
Iron chlorosis and the pH trap
This is the most misdiagnosed condition in yard trees, because the intuitive fix makes it worse.
The soil almost always has plenty of iron. The problem is that above about pH 7.0, iron reacts into forms roots cannot absorb. Utah State Extension makes the point directly: high soil pH causes chemical reactions that make the iron solid and unavailable, even though the iron is right there.
Micronutrients like iron and manganese are most available between pH 5.0 and 6.5, with 6.0 to 6.5 the optimum for general nutrient availability. Most of the alkaline West sits well above that. Sacramento Valley clay routinely runs 7.0 to 8.0.
Species that suffer most, per Michigan State: pin oak, white oak, white pine, birch, and red maple. Pin oak in alkaline soil is close to a guaranteed problem, which is why I tell people not to plant one here at all.
Three things make it worse beyond pH:
- Cool soil temperatures, which is why chlorosis often looks worst in spring and improves by midsummer
- Anything that restricts air movement into soil: compaction, plastic sheet mulch, saturated ground
- Excess potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which interfere with iron and manganese uptake
That last one is why dumping general-purpose fertilizer on a chlorotic tree can deepen the yellow. Get a soil test before you feed anything. A basic test kit reads pH in ten minutes and will tell you more than another season of guessing.
Fixing it, in order of how long it lasts
Utah State and Colorado State list four approaches. They differ a lot in speed and durability:
- Soil application of elemental sulfur with ferrous sulfate. Slowest, most durable. You are lowering pH so the tree can reach its own iron. Fall or early spring.
- Soil-applied iron chelates. Look for EDDHA chelate specifically in high-pH soil; the cheaper EDTA forms fall apart above pH 7 and waste your money.
- Foliar sprays of ferrous sulfate or chelated iron. Fastest visible result, greening leaves in one to two weeks. Only treats leaves present when you spray. A patch.
- Trunk injection of ferric ammonium citrate or iron sulfate. For valuable mature trees, and worth having an arborist do it. Each injection wounds the trunk.
Realistic expectation: leaves already yellow mostly stay yellow this season. You are buying next year’s flush.
Overwatering, the cause nobody suspects
More yard trees yellow from too much water than too little, and the symptom looks identical to a nutrient deficiency. Utah State flags iron chlorosis as “a common generic symptom of overwatering,” and notes that frequent irrigation in heavy clay produces a persistent iron deficiency.
The mechanism is simple. Roots need oxygen. Saturated soil has none. Roots that cannot breathe cannot move nutrients, so the tree goes yellow while standing in water.
Common setups that cause it:
- A young tree on the lawn irrigation schedule, getting watered three times a week for grass
- Clay soil that holds water for days after it looks dry on top
- A tree planted in a low spot where runoff collects
- Drip emitters left on the new-tree schedule two years after planting
Check before you act. Dig down six inches near the drip line. Soil that is cool and damp and holds together when squeezed is wet enough. If it is muddy, you have your answer.
If the ground stays saturated, the yellowing is the early symptom and root rot is the next one. Drought, and how it differs
Drought yellowing usually arrives with company. Extended dry periods in summer produce pale leaves plus wilting, curling, and brown crispy margins, and the tree often drops leaves early to cut its losses.
The tell that separates drought from overwatering is the soil, not the leaf. Both produce a uniformly pale canopy. Only one has dry soil six inches down.
Drought yellowing also tends to hit the top and the south side of the canopy first, where evaporative demand is highest. Chlorosis does not care about aspect.
Root damage and planting depth
If the tree has been yellow since the year you planted it, and the soil is fine, and pH is fine, look at the trunk where it enters the ground.
You should see the root flare, the point where the trunk widens into roots. If the trunk goes into the soil like a telephone pole with no flare, it is planted too deep, and it will decline for years without ever quite dying. Girdling roots do the same thing more slowly: a root circling the trunk tightens as both grow, strangling the tree’s own plumbing. The symptom is often yellowing and thin growth on one side, matching the side the root is on.
Trees moved within the last two seasons may just be in transplant shock, which produces pale, small, sparse leaves while the root system rebuilds. That one resolves on its own with consistent water and patience.
Species-specific yellowing
A few trees yellow for their own reasons:
Citrus. Yellow between the veins on citrus is usually iron or manganese in alkaline soil, but uniformly pale leaves with yellowing along the midrib often means nitrogen, and citrus are heavy nitrogen feeders. Peach and other stone fruit. Yellowing plus early leaf drop in midsummer is often a root or water problem, but check for peach leaf curl symptoms from spring first.
Fig. Figs yellow and drop leaves readily from water stress in either direction. They are dramatic and usually fine. See the fig tree growing guide.
Apple. Yellowing with dark spots is likely apple scab rather than a nutrient issue.
Birch and maple. Classic chlorosis candidates in alkaline soil, and the two most likely to have been planted in the wrong soil to begin with.

The diagnosis, in order
Work through it in this sequence and you will land on the right cause most of the time:
- Is it fall? Then it is fall.
- Look at one leaf. Green veins with yellow between them means chlorosis. Skip to step 5.
- Dig six inches down at the drip line. Muddy means overwatering. Dust-dry means drought. Fix the water and wait three weeks.
- Check the trunk base for a root flare. No flare means planted too deep.
- Test soil pH. Above 7.0 with interveinal yellowing confirms iron chlorosis.
- Is it one branch only? Then it is not soil. Look for a canker, a wound, or a girdling root on that side.
If the tree is also dropping branches, showing bark damage, or has thinning canopy from the top down, yellow leaves are a symptom of something larger. Check signs of a dying tree.
