Ash Tree Identification: Leaves, Bark, and the Lookalikes
You identify an ash tree with three checks: opposite branching, compound leaves with 5 to 9 leaflets, and diamond-patterned bark. Any one of those on its own is not enough. All three together and you have an ash.
The reason to get this right is emerald ash borer. Treatment is a recurring expense, and the decision to spend it or to remove the tree depends on knowing what is standing in your yard.
Work the checks in this order, because the first one eliminates most trees in about five seconds.
Check 1: opposite branching
Stand at the tree and look at where twigs attach to a branch.
On an ash, twigs, buds, and leaves come off in pairs, directly across from each other. Most trees are alternate, staggering their twigs down the branch. Opposite branching is uncommon enough that this single check rules out oak, birch, elm, hickory, walnut, sycamore, poplar, willow, and every fruit tree.
What is left with opposite branching: maple, ash, dogwood, and horsechestnut, plus a few shrubs.
Look at several twigs before deciding. Storm damage and pruning can break one side of a pair and make an opposite tree look alternate.
Check 2: compound leaves, 5 to 9 leaflets
Now the leaf, which does most of the remaining work.
Ash leaves are pinnately compound. What looks like a small leaf is a leaflet, and the actual leaf is the whole assembly along a central stem. To find where a real leaf starts, look for the bud at its base; leaflets do not have buds.
Specifics per Michigan State Extension and Virginia Tech:
- 5 to 9 leaflets, usually 7 on green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica)
- 7 leaflets typically on white ash (Fraxinus americana), serrate to entire on the margins
- Whole leaf 8 to 12 inches long
- Leaves arranged opposite each other on the twig

This is what separates ash from maple. Maples are opposite too, but maple leaves are simple, one broad lobed blade per leaf. If it is opposite and compound, you are down to two candidates: ash and boxelder.
Check 3: diamond-patterned bark
On a mature ash, bark is half an inch thick or more, gray-brown, with shallow furrows and corky ridges forming a distinct diamond pattern. Interlocking diamonds running up the trunk are the most recognizable ash trait from across a street.
The limitation: young ash bark is relatively smooth and has not developed the pattern yet. On a tree under about six inches in diameter, ignore bark and rely on branching and leaflets.

Ruling out the lookalikes
Michigan State Extension publishes a key for exactly this. Five trees get mistaken for ash:
Boxelder (Acer negundo)
The real confusion, because it is the only other common tree that is both opposite and compound.
- 3 to 5 leaflets, with a sharply pointed end leaflet, versus ash’s 5 to 9
- Twigs green to purplish brown, often with a waxy white coating you can rub off. Ash twigs are gray to brown, no bloom.
- Leaf scars narrow and joining in a point. Ash leaf scars look like a “C” on white ash or a “D” on green ash.
The waxy twig coating is the fastest field check. Rub a twig with your thumb. If a chalky film comes off, boxelder.
Black Walnut (Juglans nigra)
- Alternate branching, so check 1 already eliminated it
- 9 to 15 leaflets, leaf 15 to 24 inches long, much bigger than an ash leaf
- Cut a twig lengthwise: walnut has chambered pith, a ladder of hollow segments in the center. Ash pith is solid.
- Crushed foliage smells like turpentine
Hickory (Carya spp.)
- Alternate branching
- 5 to 7 leaflets with three noticeably larger leaflets at the tip
- Shagbark hickory peels in long, loose, shaggy strips, nothing like an ash diamond
Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia)
Named ash, not an ash.
- Alternate branching
- 9 to 15 leaflets
- White five-petaled flowers, then red-orange berry clusters in fall. No true ash produces berries.
Elm
Simple leaves, not compound, with the distinctive asymmetrical leaf base where one side meets the stem lower than the other. Elms have their own problems; see Dutch elm disease and elm tree diseases.
Ash seeds
If seeds are present, they settle it. Ash produces samaras: single-winged dry seeds in hanging clusters, shaped like a canoe paddle or a narrow oar.
Do not confuse them with maple samaras, which are paired and joined at the base in the familiar helicopter shape. Ash samaras hang singly in dense clusters. Ash trees are also often dioecious, so a male tree produces no seed at all, and their absence proves nothing.
Which ash you have
The two dominant landscape species in North America:
Green Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica). The most widely planted. Usually 7 leaflets in a 5 to 9 range. Tolerates wet soil, compaction, and urban conditions, which is exactly why cities planted it everywhere and why emerald ash borer had such a runway.
White Ash (Fraxinus americana). Typically 7 leaflets. Better fall color, running purple to maroon. Prefers deeper, better-drained soil. The classic baseball-bat timber species.
Regional species exist too, including Arizona ash in the Southwest and Oregon ash on the West Coast. The three checks work for the genus regardless.
Why the identification matters
Emerald ash borer has killed hundreds of millions of ash trees across North America, and it is fatal to untreated trees. If you have confirmed an ash, you have a decision:
Treat. Systemic insecticide treatment is effective but must be repeated on a cycle for the life of the tree. It is a permanent line item, and it makes sense for a large, healthy, well-placed specimen.
Remove and replace. Often the better economics for a small, poorly placed, or already-declining tree. A dead ash becomes brittle fast and gets expensive and dangerous to take down, so the decision is better made early than late.

The early borer symptoms to look for: thinning starting at the top of the canopy, D-shaped exit holes about an eighth of an inch across, vertical bark splits, S-shaped tunnels under loose bark, and heavy woodpecker activity on the upper trunk. Woodpeckers usually find it before people do.
Note on scope: ash is a cold and temperate species and is far less common in the mild-winter West Coast valleys where I garden. If you are in zone 9 California, the tree you are trying to identify is more likely a maple or a poplar.
